A penalty in the second half from Anthony Gordon saw Newcastle United come from behind to secure a frustrating draw for the Premier League leaders Manchester City, who were held to a score of 1-1 at St James’ Park.
After he was fouled by Ederson, Gordon, who has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after speculation over his future this week and reports that he had not taken part in training on Friday and Saturday, took the penalty himself held to level the scores at 1-1, after the challenge occurred in the 58th minute.
City had taken the lead in the 35th minute, when Josko Gvardiol finished a nice lay off with a near-post finish from two yards out.
The visitors and the home side both created chances but there were no winners, while Erling Haaland, who fired blanks in the league for the first time this season, headed straight at Nick Pope from close range at the end of the game.
Pep Guardiola remains on top of the table, with City sitting at 14 points. Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal have the chance to dethrone the defending champions before Newcastle move up the table to 5th place.
Data Debrief: City struggle for goals
Although City have extended their Premier League unbeaten streak to 29 matches across all competitions, this marks the first time they have drawn consecutive league fixtures since March.
Haaland has netted 10 times this season but failed to register a goal this time as opposed to making five attempts (more than any other member of his squad) that accounted for 0.36 expected goals.
Gordon’s penalty secured the vital points for Newcastle, with the forward winning seven penalties in the Premier League, at least four more than any other player since the beginning of last season.
As for Ederson, he has conceded more penalties than any other goalkeeper, a total of six, with none previously saved.
